I wonder if for some time the word could mean either a student or a teacher and then the latter fell out of use. Sometimes widespread errors that become accepted usage can ruin a word, such as we see with "biweekly" whose meaning is a) ambiguous, and b) unable to be discerned based on context.Dana Alberthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13488621586586091954noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6737851275453020904.post-76558129518666402192021-08-08T02:28:13.914-07:002021-08-08T02:28:13.914-07:00The use of kindergartner to mean a child who atten...The use of kindergartner to mean a child who attends kindergarten is rooted in a solecism. In German, der Garten is the garden, and der Gärtner is the gardener, i.e., the person who is employed to cultivate or care for the garden. Thus, on page 1363 of Webster's New International Dictionary of the English Language, Second Edition, Unabridged (1942), we find the following entry: kindergartner. n. Also kindergartener. [Cf. G. gärtner a gardener.] A kindergarten teacher.
Sometime between then and now, an ignorant person somewhere mistakenly used the word to refer to the child being cultivated, as opposed to the teacher doing the cultivating.
My youngest grandson, recently arrived from Vienna, is a yōchienji at our local kindergarten, i.e., a kindergarten kid.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
